Free Fat Talk

My eating disorder colleagues tell me that they are seeing patients that are younger and younger these days. Alarming, isn't it? See below for a real reason to talk...

From Leslie Churnin's Blog at the Dallas Morning News.....

OK, girls & women...for one week, let's all cut the talk about our dimply thighs, chipmunk cheeks, belly blob. It's officially Fat Talk Free Week.

Sponsored by Delta Delta Delta sorority, Seventeen magazine and National Organization for Women (to name but a few), the idea is to draw attention to the damaging impact of "fat talk," and to help women achieve and maintain a healthy body image.

The need for such a program is based in part of such sobering facts as these:
* Ten million U.S. women suffer from eating disorders.
* 46 percent of 9- to 11-year-olds report "sometime" or "very often" being on diets.

This week, the sorority kicks off "Reflections." The peer-led eating disorder program
is piloted at 12 universities, including the University of Texas at Dallas. Its aim: To help change the way women perceive their bodies and to focus on health, not thinness.

Read more about the program by clicking on the Reflections Body Image website.
